Cumberland Public Libraries a new literacy program, Families Exploring Literacy. It’s aim is to give children an introduction to books. The program is open to 2-3 year olds and their parent or caregiver. It’s FREE but requires an 8 week commitment. Space is limited so you must call and register, at 902-667-2135. If you’ve wanted to learn to skate, the Amherst Recreation Department is offering Adult Learn to Skate, Tuesday’s beginning Jan 8 at the Amherst Stadium. It runs from 12:15- 12:45 and it’s free. A CSA approved helmet is required. Some are available for lending. To register call 902-694-2161 or email tporter@amherst.ca

There will be a Country Gospel Morning, Wed Jan 9 from 10-noon at the Amherst Wesleyan Church. It will feature Ruth Shearer, Harold Miller and Linda Fillmore. The event is free and snacks will be provided.

The YMCA of Cumberland is holding Beginner Line Dancing, starting Wed Jan 9 from 11-12. For information, call Ashley Grace at the Y at 902-667-9112. It’s a Full of Life program and is offered at no cost.  

It’s Classic Movie Night at the Springhill Library Wed Jan 9th at 7. They will be showing the 1957 romance, An Affair To Remember, with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. A couple falls in love and agrees to meet in 6 months at the Empire State Building … but will it happen.

The Gritty to Pretty Program encourages commercial building owners in Amherst to invest in beautification and streetscaping by providing matching grants to cover a portion of renovation costs. The program is delivered as a partnership between the Town of Amherst and the Amherst & Area Chamber of Commerce. Funding is allocated on a case-by-case basis. CART, Children and Adults Reading Together, is back for it’s 12th year at Cumberland Public Libraries. The program teaches reading readiness skills to children, to prepare them for the first year of school. CART is open to children 3-5 with their parent or caregiver. It’s FREE, but requires an 8 week commitment. Space is limited you have to call and register, 902-667-2135. CART is only going to be offered in Amherst, Thursday evenings from 6-7:30, beginning Jan 10th.
